Helping businesses write better documents and better websites.
Clarity is our business
Building on a quarter of a century of the plain language campaign in the UK, CPBE helps HKSAR government departments, banks and financial institutions, law firms, management consultancies, hotels and individuals to communicate with clarity.
We believe that all communication — from State to citizen, industry to consumer, and trade to client — must be in plain language because:
You'll save time and money!
If all your in-house documents, letters to customers and user manuals are in plain language, you’d save time and money wasted in explaining what they 'actually' mean to employees and customers. You don’t like to re-read documents to try to understand them, do you?
Neither do your readers.
What do we mean by plain English?
Plain English is: The writing and setting out of essential information in a way that gives a co-operative, motivated person a good chance of understanding it at first reading, and in the same sense that the writer meant it to be understood.
Some of the principles of plain English are to:
- respect the reader
- use the active voice
- use shorter sentences
- use 'you' and other pronouns
- use simple, everyday language as far as possible.
Learning Method
We are committed to creating an awareness that much of the English we use in Hong Kong is old fashioned and more complicated than it need be.
We have developed an interactive method of learning to communicate in English that is radically different from how language is taught in schools and most other adult learning institutes.

Plain English Assessment
We are passionate about plain language. Please join us in our plain language campaign by writing to us and sending in samples of gobbledygook that you have noticed. Tell us what you want to do about it. We'll publish them here and make a huge noise about it.
We share your angst.
